I've always known that I was socially awkward, but I could never really figure out why and, therefore, couldn't figure out how to do something about it. However, I think I just pinpointed the main reason for my awkwardness.
There is a girl that Renny and I met on the bus away from my apartment one evening who gets on the bus at the same time every day. Since I also get on the bus at the same time every day for work, I happen to consistently run into her.
Well, just like the past few mornings, I ran into her this morning. Before, I had just hung out in silence, not really interacting at all, but this morning, she greeted me. It was at this point that I realized that I have absolutely no clue how to make small talk. It's not like I know nothing about this woman either. She's a chemistry grad student that has just moved here from Texas. that should be plenty to talk about nothing, right?
Apparently not for me. All I could think of to talk about was the bus and the weather, two of the most terribly boring topics one could think of. Then, after letting an awkward silence fill in, I pulled out my journal and wrote in it some just so I wouldn't panic.
Moral of the story: I really need to learn how to make small talk.
